Historic Ryde Society

REF NR: 3490

Ryde District Heritage Centre opened on August 15th, 2011. Run by volunteers – members of Historic Ryde Society (HRS) – the Centre has been created to offer a permanent display area for artefacts and photographic and film archive of Ryde’s past. Historic Ryde Society formed in October 2009 to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Victoria Arcade on July 1st, 2011. It was soon apparent this could become a fund-raising event to create a permanent heritage centre for Ryde.

After several venues were considered including St Thomas’ Heritage Centre, the basement of the Royal Victoria Arcade became available, and HRS was delighted to be offered a grant from Ryde Townscape Heritage Initiative to secure the fabric of the building. HRS made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a further grant to deliver the Heritage Centre, and the project was begun.

Many months of hard work followed, and are still continuing, as fund-raising is an ongoing process. Lady Lucinda Lambton, the three times great grand-daughter of Lord Lambton, who laid the foundation stone of the Royal Victoria Arcade, was invited to attend the celebration of the arcade in  July 2011, and very kindly agreed to become a Patron of the Society.

HRS provides four talks, four newsletters, two Antique and Collectors’ Fairs, and many other fund-raising events throughout the year. Free workshops are becoming established as a regular feature of the Centre.

HRS is working closely with other community groups and the Isle of Wight Heritage Service to display images and artefacts which are normally kept under wraps. It is the aim of HRS to create a secure space both physically and environmentally to enable release of such artefacts to continue and increase, for the benefit of the whole community
