A map of the Isle of Wight, Portsea Halinge; also the islands of Iarsey & Garnsey which are part of Hampshire.

At the end of the eighteenth century, London’s map community revolved on Philip Lea (1683-1700). He apprenticed under Robert Morden, who later cooperated. Lea left the Weavers Company in 1689. He was a government-connected publisher and globe and instrument vendor. Samuel Pepys identifies him as his map adviser and colorist. He was noted for rewriting and reissuing others’ work, notably Christopher Saxton’s county and global maps. John Seller, John Ogilby, and William Morgan sent him plates, among others. He often worked with Herman Moll later in his career. Philip’s widow Anne ran the firm for decades after his death in 1700.
