This ancient map was first published in the book titled “Atlas Maritimus & Commercialis: or, a General View of the World, so far as It Relates to Trade & Navigation,” which only included charts that were of the utmost importance to the English in terms of their commercial endeavours. Edmond Halley, who was the Astronomer Royal at the time, penned a prefatory note in which he discussed how the charts should be used.

There is speculation that Daniel Defoe was also a contributor to the work.
