The National Gazetteer was first published in sections between 1863 and 1868, and the final version went on sale in 1868. The maps, which are created by litho transfer from an intaglio plate, are among the earliest examples of colour printing. Until 1886, there were a number of subsequent editions (some with various titles). In these later editions, colouring became more sophisticated. This Isle of Wight map is from the first edition of its atlas, published in 1868.
