In 1979, while performing a magnetometer survey off the south coast of the Isle of Wight, famous Isle of Wight diver Martin Woodward discovered HMS Acheron,Royal Navy destroyer of the A-class.

She was lost early in the war when, on December 17, 1944, she sunk after striking a mine off the Isle of Wight. She had operated in Home waters and off the Norwegian coast during World War II.
