In 1916, it is thought that an Algerian was sadly lost after she was hit by a mine while sailing in the Solent about a mile off of Egypt Point on the Isle of Wight. According to what we know, there were no fatalities.

When it was attacked by a mine, the 3,837-ton ship was participating in a government operation that included transporting ballast to Avonmouth. There is a strong possibility that a German submarine was responsible for laying the device.
