Armstrong Whitworth Albermarle V1711 crashed into St Catherine's Down claiming another victim on the 13th March 1944.
Ref Number: 00175
In poor visibility, an Albermarle from Hurn’s 295 Squadron collided with the summit of St. Catherine’s Down. The pilot, Flt Lt. Kingdon, and Flt Sgts. Muddeman, Bishop, and Hulme escaped the collision unharmed; however, Flt Sgt. Knowles was injured. In 1938, the Bristol aircraft manufacturer Armstrong Whitworth devised and developed this twin-engine bomber.
It was initially put into service as a reconnaissance bomber, but it was not a great success and was ultimately put to greater use as a glider tug and paratrooper transport plane. Similar to the Mosquito, it was constructed with a substantial amount of light alloy and wood, allowing the construction processes to be distributed across a large number of companies and building locations.
