On 2nd June 1940, enroute from Andover, one of the first instances of friendly fire on a Fairey Battle light bomber occurred, taking out the aircraft from Number 12 Operational Training Unit (OTU). It crashed near the junction of Appley Road and Puckpool Hill after being hit by anti-aircraft fire from Appley.
The Pilot officer A G McIntyre managed to bail out, although hurt but his two crew died in the crash.
