The Fairey Firefly from 798 Sqaudron Fleet Air Arm flew into bad weather on the 1st March 1945 over Northgrounds Farm
Ref Number: 00221
On March 1, 1945, a Fairey Firefly belonging to 798 Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm encountered hazardous weather while flying over Northgrounds Farm. As an emergency landing contingency was necessary, the pilot, S/Lrd. J.H. Sutton, descended through the low cloud cover in an effort to locate any kind of landmark that may serve as a site to set down the aircraft.
However, his choice of timing was unfortunate since he was flying far too low and he struck the roof of stables and a barn at Northgrounds Farm. This caused the aircraft to crash into the fields opposite and then burst into flames as it hit the ground. S/Lrd. J.H. Sutton, the pilot, was killed in the collision.
