Ref Number: 00180
17th March 1942 a Fairey Swordfish crash lands in Godshill.
Ref Number: 00180
During poor visibility, Sqd. Lt. N. S. Hutchings decided to land his Fairey Swordfish as best he could. The fog and mist were extremely low-lying, so the pilot decided to descend to get a better bearing. However, he was too low and crash-landed the aircraft on marshy terrain just outside of Godshill. The entire crew, including Hutchings and R. H. Teuton, escaped unharmed.
It should be noted that there are differing dates for the actual event; however, according to Gilliam, the authority’s records indicate that the incident occurred on March 17, whereas Leal states that it occurred on March 20.
