The Germans launched one of the most eventful initial attacks of World War II on August 8, 1940, when they attacked Convoy CW9, codenamed “Peewit.” More than thirty-three aircraft were shot down on the island.
Nonetheless, only one crashed on the island. Hurricane P3267 of the 43rd Squadron, piloted by P/O H.C. Upton, was forced to crash-land at Ford Farm near Whitwell after its engine failed.
