Ref Number: 00192
This Hurricane from 238 Squadron Middle Wallop crashed near a telephone booth close to the Sun Inn in Calbourne. Pilot Officer R.A. Kings had already successfully ejected out after colliding with some BF110s operating as fighter cover for a group of He111s from KG55 returning from a very successful bombing mission on the Vickers Supermarine aircraft factory in Woolston, Southampton. A subsequent excavation at the site unearthed very few artefacts because the majority of the site is now covered by a dairy parlour.
There appears to be confusion regarding which Hurricane aircraft crashed where on the 26th; according to Gilliam, Hurricane P3830 crashed at the Sun Inn, while according to Leal, Hurricane P3830 crashed at Coleman’s Farm Porchfield. This brings us to the second issue, as the other Hurricane was P5205 in Gilliam’s records but P5208 in Leal’s. Adrian Searl’s third source corroborates Leal’s claim that P3830 descended at Porchfield.
