Ref Number: 00136
After leaving Newport Montreal on March 7th, 1918, the Norwegian steamer Braatt II (1834 tonnes) was spotted 7 miles south-west of St. Catherine’s Point in the English Channel. The German submarine UB-30 (Wilhelm Rhein) sank her as she steamed towards Rouen with a full load of coal.
The converted trawler HMT Willonyx luckily came by and scooped up the entire crew of 21. The Braatt II eventually sank and is currently perpendicular to the surface in 38 metres of water.
