Dutch two masted vessel, 183 tons register, bound from Maracaybo, Central America, founded off Brook Point -circa 1895
Ref Number: 00137
Two-masted Dutch ship with a 183-ton registration, built in 1895 near Brook Point and en route to Maracaybo, Central America. The primary source, a story from the County Press dated March 30, 1895, provides a list of names.
Seven people were rescued by the Brook lifeboat, but the ship’s load of box-wood and divi-divi (the pods of the Coesalpinia coriaria, a tree native to the tropics of South and Central America that is used to make the red dyes sapan, brayil, and other red woods) was lost at sea.
This picture is of the memorial plaque dedicated to the men and women of the Brook lifeboat, who risked their lives many times to save others, especially the passengers and crew of the brigantine Noordster.
