Tilt Yard or Jousting Field, shown on the 1898 map
Ref Number: 00416
The term ’tiltyard’ is said to derive from the practise of tilting your opponent’s guard during a joust, knocking them off their horse. The tiltyard of Carisbrooke Castle is located on the east side of the earth ramparts.
This area was formerly the place of arms, and it was supported by the Mountjoy tower on the south east corner. Tiltyards are common in late-medieval houses and castles throughout England. During his visit, Charles I is said to have used it as a bowling green.
This location is now frequently utilised for outdoor theatre events and even modern-day jousting performances.
