Ref Number: 00438
Site of an experimental station for detecting aircraft at lower altitude than the Chain Home system. It was in temporary use for two months with mobile equipment when the main Ventnor station was knocked out by the Luftwaffe in August, 1940.
The term “CHL” denotes the capacity of Chain Home Low (CHL) radars to identify aircraft operating at altitudes that fall below the capabilities of the original Chain Home (CH) radars, which were predominantly situated in close proximity to CHL radars. The capability of the Coherent Heterodyne Lidar (CHL) to accurately identify aeroplanes at altitudes as low as 500 feet (150 m) has been shown.
