The earthy precipices between Shanklin and Luccombe Chines are called Dunnose,—they form the southern termination of Sandown Bay, which is a beautiful stretch of shore of above five miles in extent, bounded on the north by the white cliffs of Bembridge.
Although it’s not featured in the engraving, this is near where HMS Eurydice sank on the 24th of March 1878 – claiming over 300 lives. The accident happened two miles from Sandown Bay, where the vessel rests eleven fathoms deep.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a poem about the shipwreck called The Homecoming of the Eurydice.
