Farringford House was built as a large manor house, and was once the home of the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Farringford, located in Freshwater, served as the residence of Lord Tennyson. The dwelling of the deceased Laureate is situated in the vicinity that is between Freshwater Gate and Alum Bay, and is concealed by an abundance of trees, rendering it nearly imperceptible. The frontal area is adorned with lush vegetation, including a well-developed magnolia tree that gracefully envelops the entrance.
Construction of this Georgian house began in 1806. It was enlarged and adorned with gothic parapets and wood-mullioned casements in 1810. Lord Tennyson described the decoration as “… like a blank verse. It will suit the humblest cottage and the grandest cathedral. It has more mystery than the classic.”
Tennyson was able to observe Freshwater Bay from behind the lateral branches of a well-extended cedar tree, while maintaining his own invisibility. The park-like grounds offer a nice environment for leisurely strolls and are accessible to tourists for inspection on specific designated times.
In his 1854 poem extending an invitation to Rev. F. D. Maurice, the author eloquently portrays the tranquil setting as he observes the gradual descent of the evening dusk, apart from the bustling urban environment and its associated disturbances. Situated at the crest of a notable hill, there exists an overall haphazardly arranged garden.
