Next to the fort, the Royal Engineers constructed the pier in 1856 for use in servicing military facilities on West Wight.

After Ryde Pier and Cowes Fountain Pier, this was the third pier constructed on the Isle of Wight. It was erected on the site of a coastguard landing pontoon from when the area served as a coastguard station.

While the sea is remarkably deep off Sconce Point (eighteen feet at the pier head, even at the lowest tide), making it ideal for a landing stage close to shore, the actual pier was relatively short and stubby, yet was utilised as the major supply route to Fort Victora for arms and ammunition to the Island.
