Fort Warden

In 1794 an eight-gun earthwork was propose for the site, but was never constructed, a smaller offering however did develop.

A bigger battery, with an eight gun proposal, was initially intended, but this coastal protection barbette battery was finished in 1863. But then a lot of other things happened, and it ended up being the standard for all the batteries in and around the Solent.

  • 2 * 63 pounder QF guns added

On the side facing the water, the fort had a wall with loopholes and canopies at the southeast and northeast corners for defence. On the east wall, opposite the gorge wall’s entrance, was a canopier for further security.

In 1957, the land was sold and turned into a campground; more recently, it has been rebuilt for residential use.
