In August 1942, this Junker JU88 was one of two reconnaissance aircraft from unit1(F) 123 flying over the island. It was early in the morning, approximately 5:30am. Heavy mist/fog was reported, and aircraft were heard but not seen flying south-east over the Godshill region. Several hours later, a Godshill farmer’s wife gathering mushrooms in the early morning heard cries for assistance.
She discovered an injured airman, Uffz Mobious, with a fractured leg upon further inspection. He had crawled nearly a quarter mile to find assistance for his crewmates. Sadly, it came out that they had both died in the accident. In the fog of St Martin’s Down, they had miscalculated their height.
