F/W Gerhardt Ebus bailed out of his doomed 109 aircraft after being attacked by 238 Squadron’s P/O W Gordon. The unfortunate airman removed his weighty footwear to improve his chances of survival in the rough waters off Dunnose point. Eventually, a local longshoreman’s boat with a military presence onboard was dispatched to rescue him, but he was sadly discovered deceased and entangled in his chute, which he had been unable to escape.
By this time, his plane had already crashed near Cowlease Hill on the outskirts of Shanklin. The aircraft fuselage apparently nose-dived into an old, covered well; the majority of the other wreckage was removed at the time of the accident. Years later, a subsequent investigation uncovered a cannon and numerous spent projectile casings.
