On May 27, 1942, during an anti-shipping patrol over the Solent, three Spitfires from 41 Squadron engaged a German BF109.Lt. Froschl was ultimately compelled to abandon his aircraft and bail out as a result of the spitfires’ relentless assault. According to the Isle of Wight County Press, he plummeted to his death around Yaverland Church copse after his chute failed to deploy.
A short distance later, the aircraft plummeted into a tulip field close to Yaverland Manor. A subsequent post-war excavation of the site uncovered very few surviving artefacts, proving that the 1942 recovery team did an excellent job.
