Queen Victoria reigned over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837 until her demise in 1901. The period commonly referred to as the Victorian era is characterised by the reign of Queen Victoria, lasting for a remarkable duration of 63 years and 216 days, surpassing the reigns of all previous monarchs in terms of length.

In 1845, Victoria acquired Osborne House from the Blachford family, and subsequently, in 1846, she and Prince Albert took up residence at the property.

The inadequacy of the home prompted Albert to undertake a process of redesigning and reconstructing it, in collaboration with Thomas Cubitt, the builder.
