RAF Blackgang was created to provide a Ground Controlled Interception function
Ref Number: 00440
RAF Blackgang is situated approximately half a mile inland, positioned above the cliffs at St Catherine’s, at an elevation of 470 feet above sea level. The radar station in question was commonly referred to as a Type 8F. From 1942 forward, it served as a ground controlled interception function.
The style and system of this particular entity differed significantly from those of Niton and St. Lawrence. The initial iteration of Type 8F employed a methodology using beam splitting. Subsequently, many other systems were implemented, operating in conjunction with the central station located at Tangmer.
