Ref Number: 0091
From the early days of steam, many of people have passed through the station terminus at the end of Ryde Pier. When steam was finally retired and the Island line between Ryde and Shanklin was electrified in 1967, it was rebuilt from its original four platforms.
Class 483 locomotives, originally built for the London Underground in 1938, were originally intended for use on the route. Over the years, a wide variety of vessels used the Pier, transporting passengers from places like Portsmouth Harbour to the Pier.
Updates and new stock have subsequently replaced the older underground transit 483’s, additionally a new “Fastcat” service whihc takes around 15mins has been introduced from Portmsouth Hard to Pier end. The Pier is undergoing another regeneration with the addition of a walkway between the current train track and passenger vehicle pier replacing the old tramway.
