Sandown & Shanklin Flying Services was founded in early 1935 with the goal of purchasing the already existing Shanklin Flying Services (with two aircraft) and establishing operations in Sandown.
With the exception of Somerton, all IOW airfields were closed and landing grounds were impeded when WWII began. After the war, the airfield reopened as the Isle of Wight Airport, and flights resumed, operated by a variety of tiny (and sometimes transient) airlines. Furthermore, a large number of light aircraft used the field, particularly during the summer months. However, by the early 1970s, commerce had dwindled and the pitch was closed. The land was sold in 1976, and the new owners reopened the airstrip later that year.
