One of the newer resorts that sprung up along the line, Sandown station, opened its doors in 1864. It was a junction for the lines that went to Ryde, Newport, and Cowes at the time. Despite the fact that in 1870–1871 a two-story extension was built upon the existing structure of the station in order to house the station offices.

The station was closed from January 1, 1967, all the way through March 20, 1967, and then again from January 20, 2021, all the way through December 20, 2021, while the railway was being upgraded to handle electric trains.
