The station’s buildings and both platforms are still standing, however the space between the platforms has been filled in. A station sign was installed on the down platform, and a new canopy was installed over the main structure on the up platform. Two bungalows have been built out of the former waiting areas.
Only the Whitwell stop had a passing loop and two platforms. The up platform has the station’s main buildings, while the down platform has a tiny waiting shelter. On the lower level, you’d find the loading dock and goods yard. Although the Isle of Wight Central Railway (IWCR) took over the NG & SLR in 1913, the direct route to Ventnor through the Isle of Wight Railway was always more popular. When the Southern Railway took control in 1923, they made cuts to save money, and the passing loop was no longer necessary due to the low volume of traffic.
On 16.3.1928, the station was designated as ‘partially unstaffed’ (summer season only), and on 1.7.1941, it was reduced again, this time to a stop and goods depot with no permanent employees.
