Yarmouth Castle

Yarmouth Castle was constructed subsequent to the demise of its innovative architect, Henry VIII, serving as one of his fortified harbours intended to dissuade any French invasions.

The aforementioned artillery bastion, characterised by a novel arrowhead design, is strategically located near the quay in Yarmouth. Notably, it occupies a prominent vantage point overseeing the port of Yarmouth and the Solent.There is speculation, however unverified, of potential French landings. Shortly after its construction, alterations to the structure commenced, beginning with the filling of the northern section of the inner courtyard with earth in order to provide a gun battery position.

A cluster of residential structures was constructed in the rear, resulting in the creation of a significantly narrow passageway.In the late 17th century, additional efforts were made to complete the filling of the moat, while concurrently constructing a substantial structure recognised today as the George Hotel, situated on the eastern perimeter.

The fort, like to other others constructed in the Solent region, may not have witnessed any significant military engagement. This fact might be argued as a valid justification for their establishment, since they served as effective deterrents at that era.
